CONSERVATION AND UTILIZATION OF UNDER UTILIZED INDIGENOUS TROPICAL FRUITS IN PALAWAN

ROMEO R. LEROM Western Philippines University Aborlan, Palawan

This study was conducted primarily to identify, collect and verify mangosteen and other Garcinia spp. and other tropical fruits present in Palawan; to identify elite germplasm; and to develop methods for utilizing the evaluated genetic resources for improvement. The study documented 46 species of tropical fruit species present in the Mantalingahan Range in the municipality of Rizal, Palawan. It has characterized and evaluated 11 fruit species and raised 13 different species in the nursery for the field genebank and sources of rootstock for asexual propagation. Coordinate readings were taken using the Global Positioning System (GPS) for the species encountered that are needed for the distribution maps of these species. Majority of these fruits identified and collected are widely utilized as food by the indigenous tribes and sold in the market particularly during “taboan” or market day. Among the indigenous fruits commonly sold are the following: (Willughbeia sp) tabo and palau-biyok; Nephelium spp. (maraitum, manti, and usaw) and Artocarpus champeden (badak) Durio spp. (loud and dugyan), Garcinia lateriflora (Kandis) and Xantophyllum amoenum (mararing). In-situ conservation of these tropical fruits is highly recommended to prevent cutting of these species for lumber by some people in the area. Likewise, chemical analysis of the fruits must be done to establish its potential as sources food and to establish its nutritional value. The result of the study provides pertinent information of the diversity of the tropical fruits in Palawan. Identification of the potential fruit species for domestication and commercialization especially those species which are sold by the indigenous people in the market gave us insights of potential reforestation species and at the same time as sources of food for the people in Palawan.
